What is Estero Known For?

One of the things that Estero, FL, is best known for is its historical beginnings. In 1882, a German homesteader, Gustave Damkohler, planted mulberry trees along the Estero River and was soon joined by those who would establish the area’s fish camps and citrus groves. Soon, in 1894, the property was donated to Cyrus Teed.

Teed believed that people live on the inside of the Earth’s outer skin and celestial bodies are located within the Earth itself. This is known as Koreshan Unity, and many followers were drawn to it. They established a settlement and even a political party – The Progressive Liberty Party. However, the Florida legislature abolished the municipality in 1907.

Eventually, against the leader’s beliefs that he was immortal, Teed died in 1908, membership dwindled, and only the foundation remains as The College of Life Foundation. Today, the state owns the original land and has become the Koreshan State Historic Site.

The village of Estero itself remained an unincorporated community until December 31, 2014.
